College program of instruction approval files, 1989-[ongoing].

Before instituting a new academic program of instruction, a college must submit a program proposal to the Department of Post-Secondary Education for review and approval. To gain final approval of the proposed program, the department must submit the proposal to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE), which is authorized to approve all new units or programs of instruction for academic credit in the higher education system (Ala. Acts, No. 79-461 [1979]). This series consists of college program of instruction approval files which document efforts to secure approval from ACHE on proposed programs for the college system. Typical records in this series consist of program proposals and correspondence. Information in the proposal includes notification of intent to establish a new program, curriculum of the program, need for the program, budget requirements, faculty salary, equipment needs, employment projections, estimated funding required, source of funding, related existing programs, objectives of the program, degree level, enrollment projections, letters of endorsement/recommendation for need of program, and surveys to determine the need for the program.
